Marshall said, "Well I finally got someone to show me
how to scan and send you this picture of Duke Ellington that I promised, so
here it is (see Attachments). The date I had printed on the back says June 28,
1964, so that's probably very close to when I took it, give or take a few days.
To repeat what I said in my first note to you, he was playing at a ballroom in
Chicago that night. As my dancing partner and I glided past I paused just long
enough to whip out my Brownie Starflash instamatic (Kodak rollfilm 110; 12 pics
to a roll) and snap a picture. Since I still have the camera and a few of the
flashbulbs, I can even tell you they were blue M2 bulbs. Far as I can remember,
it was the only pic on the roll with strangeness in it. I also remember being
very disappointed in the pic since it would have been so nice without the white
whispy stuff, but I put it in my book anyway. If it had been anybody less
important than the Duke I probably would not have saved it."
Dave's Notes:
The ectoplasmic swrirls suggest that Duke played for a much bigger audience that night.
