My wife and I reside in Saint Louis MO. In Feb of 1998 we became interested in Ghost Hunting and photography. In July of 1998 after a few cemetary excursions we decided to stay at the Lemp Mansion in St. Louis. I'm not sure if know much of the house, it is a 33 room mansion that was built in 1868 and in 1876 became the residence of the Lemp family (of the Lemp Brewing Co.)
Three members of the family committed suicide in the house (William Sr. William Jr. and Charles) with another doing herself in at another residence. The home is now operated as a bed & breakfast and a restaurant. When decided that we would use the night for relaxation and picture taking. Since we were the only ones at the house that night, we had freedom to explore every nook and cranny (we were respectful to the property of course!).
We took pictures from 8 P.M. to about 1am inside and outside. Then we returned to our room to play cards. We were by ourselves and the house had been quiet all night we were not nervous or afraid at all! At about 3 A.M. we decided to go outside one more time and finish out our remaining rolls of film. Outside we enjoyed the cool summer night for a bit and then returned inside. Strangely, it was at this time that I felt funny, a chill down my back and the urge to keep looking behind me. I know someone was there with us! I think relaxing from the excitement of being there made us more succeptable to the energy of the spirits. My wife then told me she felt felt wierd and 'spooked out'.
We then agreed to return to our room and call it a night. On our way back we stopped by the main staircase to look at a glass case with old Lemp Brewery artifacts. As we were looking we heard a creak from the couch behind us I immediately turned I held up my camera and looked at my wife, she nodded and I snapped a picture.
We are returning to the Mansion March 6 1999 where we are hosting a party and will be staying the night once again. I have done some research in the history of the mansion and the Lemp family and it is truly exciting. I found that a seance was performed and recorded in the main dining hall in 1979 and shown on the Halloween episode of Real People in 1980. And also that the house was considered by Life magazine in 1980 as one of the most haunted houses in America. We will be taking more pictures on March 6. If you have any opinions, suggestions, or would like more info on the mansion please email me back chrogers@swbell.net. Again I have the photo of the couch enclosed. Thank you very much for your website, your patience, and most of all your time!
